11 Candidates Qualify for Democratic Primary

Eleven Congressional Candidates have been qualified for the Democratic Primary Election on Tuesday, June 10, 2014: Don Beyer Jr., Lavern J. Chatman, Adam P. Ebbin, Charniele L. Herring, Patrick Hope, Alfonso H. Lopez, Mark Levine, Satish Korpe, Bruce Shuttleworth, Derek Hyra, and William D. Euille.

One Congressional Candidate, Mark Sickles, filed on March 10 and withdrew on March 13, and one Congressional Candidate’s Petitions had 549 qualified voters in the Eighth Congressional District.

The Congressional  Candidates each submitted the following documents:

  1. Declaration of Candidacy;
  2. Petitions containing at least 1,000 signatures of qualified voters in the Eighth Congressional District; and
  3. A Receipt from the State Board of Elections (SBE) in Richmond for payment of the Primary Filing Fee of $3,480. 

Arlington and the City of Alexandria registrars reviewed the signatures on the Congressional Candidates’ Petitions and eleven candidates were qualified.  

The Registrars found that Nancy Najarian had 549 signatures of qualified voters in the Eighth Congressional District. The SBE requires that Congressional  Candidates’ Petitions contain at least 1,000 signatures of qualified voters in the Eighth Congressional District.

The Congressional District Chair is required by law to submit to the SBE by April 1, at 5:00 pm the certification of the names of the candidates who filed with the Chair, the date and time of each candidate’s filing and that a minimum number of 1,000 qualified petition signatures were found for each candidate. The certification must be received by the SBE no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1.

For the candidates who either filed simultaneously on March 10 at 12 noon or filed simultaneously on March 27 at 4:59:59, the State Board of Elections will hold a Ballot Order Drawing for the House of Representatives – 8th District – Democratic Party on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, in the Washington Building, Room B27, 10:00 a.m. The Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) will have a representative at the Ballot Order Drawing.
