DPVA Reception Honoring the Life and Legacy of Barbara Johns

February 20, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

On Saturday, February 20, 2016, 7-9 pm please join the Democratic Party of Virginia along with Senator Mark Warner, Senator Tim Kaine, and Congressman Bobby Scott for a reception to honor the life and legacy of civil rights activist Barbara Johns at the Barrel House restaurant (140 Virginia St, Richmond, VA 23219) in Richmond (previously the Hat Factory).  The exterior entrance to the venue is down a set of stairs, and there will be signage and guides for people to the ADA accessible elevator for the reception. Tickets start at $50 a person, heavy hor d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic drinks are included in ticket price and there will be a cash bar. Please RSVP here or contact Jamie at or call 804-895-7576.

“Barbara Johns was a brave 16 year-old high school student that organized and led her classmates in a strike to protest the substandard conditions at the segregated Prince Edward County Moton High School, in Farmville, VA. Through Barbara’s strategic organizing abilities and courageous actions she garnered the support of NAACP lawyers Spotswood Robinson and Oliver Hill to take her case about equitable conditions for Moton High School.

Robinson and Hill filed suit at the federal courthouse in Richmond, Virginia. The case was called Davis v. Prince Edward. In 1954, the Farmville case became one of five cases that the US Supreme Court reviewed in Brown v Board of Education of Topeka when it declared school segregation unconstitutional.”

Barbara Johns’ story reminds us that one voice can start a movement and the importance of organizing our community to produce change. The Party is working diligently to have all the resources necessary to support all voices and protect the vote in this next election. Please help make the DPVA stronger as we build our organization to keep the Commonwealth blue in 2016!
