Former Gov. George Allen, the Republican U.S. Senate nominee, has agreed to three fall debates with former Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, the Democratic nominee.

  • September 20th, Thursday, 12-1 pm – hosted by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, McLean, Virginia. The debate will also air live on NBC4 and then be rebroadcast on Sunday, September 23 at noon, following Meet The Press’ Press Pass program.
  • October 8th, Monday – hosted by the AARP, League of Women Voters Virginia, WVCE Public Radio and WTVR CBS 6 TV Richmond, Virginia.
  • October 18th, Thursday – hosted by WSLS NBC 10 TV and Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia.

Kaine spokesperson Brandi Hoffine said, “We’ve accepted eight broadcast debates across Virginia, including these three. We’re hopeful that there will be more so that as many Virginians as possible have the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates, but we’re looking forward to these three.”

Allen and Kaine have debated twice so far — last December at AP Day at the Capitol and in July at the Homestead, a session sponsored by the Virginia Bar Association.

“Some men see things as they are and ask why? I see things that never were and ask why not?” Robert Kennedy’s words, spoken in hope, mirror those spoken by Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Lincoln Memorial when he shared his dream with the world in 1963.

The annual Virginia Kennedy-King dinner, sponsored by the Eighth Congressional District Democratic Committee, celebrates Robert Kennedy’s and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision. It is an event to honor those Virginians who strive to make the hopes and dreams of these two great leaders a reality. It is a time to reflect on how both of these men continue to touch our lives as Democrats and live in our hearts as Virginians. The monies raised by the event go towards our effort to support Virginia’s Democrats.

Historic DNC Platform Goes to Ratification at the National Convention

Published on August 12, 2012 in DNC

from C-SPAN, Washington Post, Business Week, Advocate.com

Every four years, the Democratic National Convention adopts a new national platform which is an official statement of the Democratic Party’s position on a variety of issues. The Platform Committee is responsible for drafting and recommending a proposed national platform to the Democratic National Convention for approval by the delegates.

This year the met in Detroit, Michigan. The 15-member Platform Committee was chaired by Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker and Lt. Gen. Claudia Kennedy (Ret.). At the meeting on Saturday, August 11th, members discussed and amended the draft platform as well as voting on a final version to present to convention delegates in Charlotte, North Carolina. The draft platform was created by the Platform Drafting Committee in Minneapolis in July.

The Platform committee unanimously approved a platform that included a same-sex marriage plank for the first time in history, as well as calling for the repeal of a 1996 law, signed by Democratic President Bill Clinton, which recognizes marriage as between a man and woman. Some federal courts have struck it down as unconstitutional. Mayor Booker said, in closing, “we have a platform that will excite not just Democrats but the nation and ensure that Barack Obama will be reelected.”

The final platform language has not yet been released, but a source said that the LGBT-specific sections, including the new amendment, would not change between now and the convention.

President Barack Obama said in May that he supports same-sex marriage. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney doesn’t (and neither does his VP pick, Paul Ryan), and both have endorsed a federal constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage.

“At the end of the day it’ll maybe repel some and attract others to be more engaged,” Booker told reporters, referring to the platform plank. “This campaign is not going to turn on gay marriage. This campaign is going to turn on who has the best ideas for the economy.”

The full convention will vote on the platform on the first day of the Democratic Convention in September.
